Nationwide Poll: Democrats Have Political Advantage on Key National Security and Foreign Policy Issues

WASHINGTON, DC — National Security Action today released an in-depth effort to test voters’ attitudes towards national security and foreign policy, which identified key issues and corresponding messages that present clear political opportunities for Democrats in the midterm elections.

Results showed that a healthy majority of voters believe that Trump is making America less respected in the world, and a plurality believe that he is making America less safe. This voter dissatisfaction with Trump’s reckless and erratic approach erodes and, in some cases, overturns the traditional perception of a Republican advantage in matters of national security. The findings demonstrate that, far from needing to avoid these issues, Democrats can gain a political advantage by approaching the right national security issues in the right ways.

The poll, conducted with Geoff Garin of Hart Research Associates, was conducted in July with a sample size of just over 1,000 individuals, all of whom voted in the 2016 election. The poll tested:

  • Voters’ attitudes towards national security and foreign policy under the Trump administration;
  • The salience of specific issues; and,
  • The resonance of particular messages.
