American Public Opinion on Trump’s Handling of Trade and Tariffs
More than half of U.S. voters disapprove of Trump's handling of the economy (58%), as well as his approach to trade and tariffs (60%), according to a new poll commissioned by National Security Action.
Key Findings
A majority of voters — including 67% of Independents — disapprove of the way Trump is dealing with tariffs and trade. Nearly a third of Republican voters disapprove as well.
Across a range of foreign and domestic policy issues, inflation and the cost of living are considered extremely or very important by the largest percentage of voters — 71%.
When considering foreign policy issues alone, tariffs and the trade war rank among the two most important. For Independents and Democratic voters, tariffs and the trade war are the top foreign policy issue.
When presented with various criticisms of Trump’s foreign policy, 70% of respondents found messaging about his trade war worsening the cost of living convincing.
Messaging Guidance: When communicating on Trump’s tariffs and trade, it’s vital to connect Trump’s actions and voters’ domestic priorities — namely inflation and the cost of living.
